Absurd humor and nimble wordplay rule in Tom Stoppard’s Travesties, the second of CAST’s four staged readings for the 2012-13 season.
This extremely boisterous play takes its lead from Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest as it explores odd possibilities inherent in the obscure fact that James Joyce (soon to be a world-famous novelist), Tristan Tzara (celebrated co-founder of the international Dadaist art movement) and Vladimir Lenin (Bolshevik fomenter of the second Russian revolution) sought refuge in Zürich, Switzerland, during the First World War.
Filled with verbal gems, theoretical puzzles, ruminations on art and politics, and robust philosophical debate, the Tony Award-winning Travesties makes for a wild ride through mistaken identity, romantic fantasy, political travesty, and artistic creativity.
