Stunning Salvaged Wood Step Stools
Taught by: Cynthia Caudill
Students will create a painted and upholstered step stool from salvaged wood.

Chalk Art Extravaganza

Get a head start on this year’s Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest sponsored by Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital. Designs created during the class can be entered into the contest that evening. Winners announced and prizes awarded at 6:00pm at Columbia Center for the Arts.

Absolutely Out There Abstract Expressions

Enjoy a four-day workshop of thinking outside of the box, pushing your artistic limits and playing with mixed media, pastels, painting, printmaking and collage.

Sumptuous Silk Painted Pillows
Taught by: Shelley Toon Hight
Create beautiful painted silk pillows in this four day workshop. Learn to use gutta resists and machine sewing while creating a functional piece of art!

Art Explorations

Spend your morning in the studio with Sarah creating whimsical and wonderful works of art inspired by the natural world.

Cross-Cultural Gathering Places
Taught by: Yasmin Acosta Meyers
In this three-day bi-lingual workshop students will map the public art in downtown Hood River, create maps and explore the cultural benefits of gathering places. Students will create an ephemeral community art piece on the library grounds. This class is ideal for students who speak Spanish as their first language or students who are currently learning Spanish.

Natural Dyes
Taught by: Amirra Malak
Explore natural dyes on silk using materials ranging from onion skins to beetles! Natural dyes are non toxic and earth friendly. Some dye stuffs will be hand gathered from local plants. Intricate Japanese Shibori tie dye techniques will be explored as well.

Hogwarts Basics

Walk into the realm of Harry Potter. Basking in their imaginations students will create magic potion bottles; spell books with eyeballs, wands that light up and sparkling capes creating their own magic.

Luminary Houses
Taught by: Kara Sisk
The project in this class will be a constructed “house like” structure made of paper, which is then collaged, painted & or stamped. It is illuminated by an interior light. Many of these projects have been called “Spirit Houses” honoring people, ancestors, mythological characters and places that are special to the artist. They are quite magical and will softly light a special place in your home..

Innovative Performance Theatre Workshop
Taught by: HRVHS Theatre Teacher, Rachel Harry
For serious, aspiring performers as well as students who just want a super-fun, creative outlet this summer. Students will discover and gain skills that will serve them on stage and throughout life in this innovative and exciting approach to performance. Plus HRVHS Phoenix Theatre Company members will act as workshop assistants to Rachel so students will have the opportunity to connect with other creative, artistic thespians! Performance Showcase for parents and friends on the last day of class.

OH, SNAP!
Taught by: Professional photographer, Katharine Kimball
Explore digital point and shoot photography as we go on a walkabout through downtown Hood River and the waterfront looking for unique and interesting points of view, patterns, abstractions and people to photograph. You will learn the basic settings of your point and shoot camera, how to create dynamic compositions, and tips for story telling through your photography. Bring your own digital camera, fully charged batteries, camera cord, and SD card. Final photographs will be published to a web gallery.

Toad Taverns and Hobbit Homes
Taught by: Fiona Morehouse
We will pinch, coil, and roll clay "hobitats" that will truly welcome in friends from the natural world. You are sure to find toads and hobbits taking residence in these unique homes when you decorate them with flower pots, shuttered windows, stone chimneys, and climbing vines. Let nature inspire you and your muddy hands as you delve into the world of clay.

Silly 6 and 7 Year Olds
Taught by: Marni Sickles
This class celebrates the imagination, enthusiasm and freedom of the 6 & 7 year old child. Students explore soap making, bookmaking, and more! It will be a week of absolute fun and laughter!
