Me, Myself, and I Workshop

With teaching artist, Sarah Starr

Aspiring young artists will explore their creative, imaginative selves through 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional portraits and masks. A great workshop for students who like to roll their sleeves up and get their hands dirty! (Must attend all four classes)

Sidewalk Chalk With a Twist

With teaching artist, Shelley Toon Hight

Emerging young artists will get a head start on this year’s First Friday Chalk Art Competition on July 2nd as they explore the brilliant pastel color palette, composition and design. Designs created in the class are eligible for entry in the competition.

Butterflies, Flowers, Birds and Insects

Artists will embark on a drawing and painting journey as they look closely at the world around them and visually express the magic and wonder they discover!

Silk Painting Power

With teaching artist, Shelley Toon Hight

We will paint silk pillows, banners, hoops and more in this studio class designed to give young artists the opportunity to take artistic risks and explore with this wonderfully freeing medium. We will experiment with salt, sugar and gutta resists and with non-toxic Jacquard dyes to create objects we have not yet imagined!

Pre-College Portfolio Development Workshop

With HRVHS AP Design Teacher, Amirra Malak, and various gorge area professional artists

Immerse yourself in college-level curriculum and become part of a creative community of aspiring teen artists who hope to study visual art in college. This is your opportunity to work with several experienced artists who will help you develop a strong portfolio for college admission. Pre-College provides a perfect platform to expand your knowledge, grow as an individual, develop strong portfolio pieces, and get a taste of college life.

This program is subsidized by a grant from the Ford Family Foundation. Additional scholarship funds are available through the Anne Margaret Gellar Memorial Art Fund for Children. Please contact Shelley Toon Hight at education@columbiaarts.org for scholarship inquiries.

Innovative Performance

Theatre Workshop with HRVHS Theatre Teacher, Rachel Harry

For serious, aspiring performers as well as students who just want a super-fun, creative outlet this summer. Students will discover and gain skills that will serve them on stage and throughout life in this innovative and exciting approach to performance. Plus HRVHS Phoenix Theatre Company members will act as workshop assistants to Rachel so students will have the opportunity to connect with other creative, artistic thespians!

Teens With Cameras Rule the World

With photographer, Katharine Kimball

Join Portland professional photographer, Katharine Kimball to discover the secrets of stunning composition. Budding photographers will gain knowledge of their point and shoot or SLR cameras in this workshop that is designed for those who like to take artistic risks and explore outside of the box! Student work will be displayed on a web gallery.

Print Making Extravaganza

With Shelley Toon Hight

An exciting 4 days of print making exploration awaits you! Experiment with various tools and technique from potatoes to Styrofoam while printing on paper, fabric, wood and more.

4th Annual Plein Air Painting and Writing for Children at Dancing Moon Farm

With various instructors including Erika Rench, Shelley Toon Hight and Kateri Osborn Lohr

Join a full day adventure and create stunning works of visual and literary art while exploring the grounds of a wonderful, organic flower and vegetable farm. Student work will become a part of the Plein Air Show at Columbia Arts on First Friday, September 3rd.

Fabulous Fairies

With Portland Innerscape Art Center Phenomenon, Kara Sisk

Join in a week of fantasy! Students will use their imagination to create a fairy character with it¹s own story & environment. Create fairy furniture out of twigs, leaves, flowers, and seedpods; fairies out of fabric and create a hand-bound storybook.

Imaginative Warriors

With Portland Innerscape Art Center Phenomenon, Kara Sisk

Come create your own Warrior character...one from your own imagination. In this class students will make drawings and create a story about their inner Warrior, where he/she comes from, where he/she lives, what he/she defends, etc. will make a wooden shield and plaster cast helmet of their own design to really get into the role!

August 23, 24, 25, 26
